The Future of Graduate and Post-Graduate Text Books: Not an e-book, Not a Website

Marjolein Towler.

This completely digital text book, published by Digital Workbook International, LLC, contains over 400 pages of text, approximately 1 hour of video, over 300 live internet links, nearly 100 interactive exercises and planning pages. It is purpose designed to be read and used on screen although it does contain a fully printable version.

Since there are no other examples of this kind of book around, we had to "invent the wheel" to some extent. So this paper approaches the topic from a practitioner's point of view and will discuss:
- choices made and why, both in content and production;
- considerations of information flow and usability;
- interactivity design and issues of novice and advanced computer users;
- the lessons learned for both content delivery and production methodology;
- future versions.
